How to convert HEIC to JPG on Windows
When a Windows website or app asks for JPG, convert your HEIC photo and attach the resulting .jpg file. If you only want to view the original, adding HEIF support to Windows may be enough. Those are different tasks: making Windows display an image does not automatically create a JPEG copy.
Convert without installing a desktop app
The FreeHEICtoJPG converter includes its own image decoder and processes selected photos in your browser. You do not need to install the Windows HEIF extension just to use this tool. Use an updated browser with WebAssembly support, such as Edge, Chrome, or Firefox.
- Click Choose photos and select your .heic or .heif files, or drag them from File Explorer into the photo drop area.
- Leave Image quality at 90% for an initial copy. Keep original dimensions unless the receiving site asks for a smaller image.
- Click Convert to JPG. The files run one at a time. The list shows which photos succeeded and which need attention.
- Click Download beside an image. To save the completed batch together, choose the ZIP download button and then Save ZIP when it appears.
Extract a downloaded ZIP before attaching individual pictures to a form that requires JPG. Check the picture, dimensions, and file size in the saved result. Your originals remain unchanged; the converter does not overwrite files in their original folder.
If you want Windows to open the original HEIC
Windows HEIF support depends on the installed components and application. Microsoft documents the HEIF extension codec and notes that the required HEVC codec may not be available on every PC. Use the official Microsoft Store links in that documentation if you need native support.
Microsoft’s Photos extension troubleshooting page specifically applies to Windows 10 and describes HEIF and HEVC extensions. It is not a promise that every Windows version has the same Photos menus or licensing. Check the requirements shown on your own device before installing anything.
Choose settings for the destination
A maximum width or height is different from a file size limit. This tool can cap the longest edge at 2,400, 1,600, or 800 pixels while keeping proportions. It never enlarges a smaller photo. For a form with a megabyte limit, inspect the output size and try a smaller dimension or lower quality if necessary; there is no guaranteed target byte size.
Keep the original dimensions if you need the available detail for printing or later editing. This is still JPEG conversion, so even 100% quality is not a lossless archival copy. The format comparison explains the tradeoffs.
Fix a failed conversion
Check the input limits: 30 files per batch, 25 MB per file, 150 MB in total, and no image above 40 megapixels. The megapixel check happens before resizing. If a batch runs out of memory, save the finished results, clear the list, and retry fewer files. Renaming an unsupported file to .heic or a HEIC file to .jpg will not change its format.
The converter produces one still JPG per input and omits location and camera metadata, depth information, and Live Photo video. Transparent areas become white and HDR colours may differ. Image bytes stay in your browser during conversion; read the privacy notice for the separate handling of normal website traffic data.
